At Wall of Sound, we like to keep our ears to the ground and scout out the latest talent in the Australian heavy // alternative music scene. There's a breadth of talent waiting to be discovered in Regional Australia and the latest addition to this sea of musicians is Repose, a deathcore project brought to you by Joey Taylor of I See The End, and Michael Veneris of Artifact. They have launched their first release in the form of a 3-track EP titled Ossuary of Sorrow, and I'm here to tell you what Repose and this EP are all about.

Each song on Ossuary of Sorrow exists to challenge your thinking on heavy topics with heavy music. 'Momento Mori' provides a fast-paced commentary on a 'society numbed by excess'. The expertly executed instrumental arrangements courtesy of Joey keep the listener guessing and the closing breakdown into fade out leaves time for contemplation before launching into 'Vox Mortis'. Michael's vocal range is showcased well here. His consistently fun false chords and yells were complemented by some intense gutturals and nasty as fuck highs. The melodies and switch ups help to portray the viewpoint of a first responder who is burdened by the lives they couldn't save. The exploration of these feelings via monologue before a face melting breakdown is a feeling that can only be channeled through such heavy music.

'Ossarium' is a brutal reflection on victims of colonial violence, particularly Indigenous people taken into mission or residential schools. The verse that opens with "Roots choke on the marrow of innocence" goes incredibly hard, and the concluding lyric "Upon we stand, the hallowed ground" are examples of the intense and honest songwriting that Repose are capable of.

There is no doubt that the heavy music scene can feel like a struggle sometimes. It's so invigorating though whenever any new artist gets to make a mark on the scene, and Repose have brought their A game for their debut EP. If you like your deathcore punishing yet purposeful, give Ossuary of Sorrow a spin.
