Mélancolia ‘SPIT!’ on Heavy Music Trends with New Single feat. DREGG's Christopher Mackertich

When Mélancolia announced their next album, they encapsulated what to expect on RANDOM.ACCESS.MISERY with ‘ALL_IS_RUST’. The band hinted that they had a unique take on the heavy music scene up their sleeve, and now we have more of an idea on the direction they’re pursuing. With Christopher Mackertich of DREGG on board, prepare your ears for the latest taste of Blackened Nu Metal.
‘SPIT!’ has an unsettling vibe from the get-go featuring funky bass work and groovy drums. Alex Hill screams “Spit It Out”, kicking off the chorus and following up with signature highs. Billy Morris rips some chuggy guitars and melodic riffs, then I find myself pleasantly surprised by the inclusion of cleans. If you told me I’d hear melodic vocals in a Mélancolia song when I listened to ‘Horror_Ethereal’, I would’ve told you to jog on. Alex interplays these with the right amount of Nu Metal nuance, leading into Christopher’s vocal feature. Heavier sounds are less prominent here in comparison to the rhythmic melodies and faster cleaner vocals. In contrast, the entire song still feels eerie thanks to the atmospheric instrumentals and malicious whispers.
Mélancolia have demonstrated their ability to create eerie and heavier music that is unlike anything else I’ve heard. Their goal is to dismantle the trends that perpetuate the scene and based on their first two singles I think RANDOM.ACCESS.MISERY will accomplish exactly that.
