The “metal is girly-pop” trend has taken over TikTok and the absolute cult-following of Electric Callboy has proven one thing- sometimes heavy music lovers just want to dance. Melbourne electro/metal act The City has understood this and is treating us with their new single ‘24k’.
The City first hit the scene in 2015 and have dedicated years to writing music and evolving their sound. Proving their commitment to their craft, the band headed to Nashville in 2017 to record their first full-length album Light The Flame, with Sonny Truelove (who has also worked with the likes of Polaris and Young Lions).
‘24k’ is the much-anticipated follow-up from their 2022 EP Neon Dreams and showcases everything we’ve grown to love about The City but in a whole new light. On the new track, vocalist Vaughan Sullivan shares
“The verses should bring on that nostalgic feeling of eyes first meet across the room lust, then onto more of romantic appreciation for that person throughout the choruses. It’s about the scale of desire as it develops,”
The offering is fun, but sweet. Definitely still a party tune but rather than an element of reckless abandon, it has a more innocent love feel. Overall, it truly captures that nostalgic sound of groups like Cobra Starship, Skip The Foreplay and 30h!3 that had an absolute grip over us in the ‘00s- of course through a heavier filter.
“Tipping the pit calls of hardcore/metal on its head, the song starts off with a solo vocal and synth bass, giving throwbacks to early 2000’s house bangers we grew up hearing when going out looking for love”, says vocalist and guitarist Josh Nicholson
Finishing up shows with Nocturnal Animals and an Australian East Coast tour on the horizon, ‘24k’ is only the beginning of what we can expect from The City for the rest of 2023.
