Evanescence are one of the most iconic bands in the alternative scene; the scale of the shows they’re on is immense – headlining arenas across Australia last year and supporting Metallica in stadiums is no small feat. Emos both elder and youthful lined up early around the block for the chance to see Evanescence’s smallest show in 20 years. The eager crowd told stories of how long they’d been listening to the band, and it was clear that this passionate set of people couldn’t be more deserving to see Evanescence perform at the sold-out Metro Theatre.

I am a firm believer in internationals having at least one local support in a show like this, however I also appreciate the pure focus on the key act of the evening. I’m sure attendees and the band both appreciate an earlier close to the gig ahead of their show with Metallica the following day.

Moving onto the show; the lights dimmed and the roar of the crowd was surreal. One by one Evanescence took to the stage and launched into ‘Afterlife’. Drummer Will Hunt was a weapon on the kit, and he looked even more powerful with the backdrop behind him showcasing visuals from Netflix’s Devil May Cry series. While Evanescence might be used to playing big stages, they used all the freedom they had on the Metro stage, roaming around to keep the energy up. Amy Lee has one of the most iconic voices of this generation, and her words in unison with a passionate audience was beautiful. Emma Anzai used her bass mastery to ramp up the power of heavier songs like ‘Going Under’, ‘Take Cover’, and ‘End Of The Dream’. The guitar skills of Tim McCord and Troy McLawhorn were utilized for powerful melodies and fun as fuck solos.

Throughout the set there were many calls for a shoey. If a band doesn’t respond to a shoey call, generally I’d think you shut up about it. However it was kind of mad to hear someone else in the crowd call out the incessant shoey chanter, especially as this often occurred during key changes or instrument swap overs whilst Amy was trying to talk to the audience. Amy however kept her cool, set up her keyboard on centre stage and enhanced the melodies of the set. She took the time to talk about the community that was in the room and shout out the fans who’d flown internationally. The significance of Evanescence on such small stages cannot be understated, especially to those attendees who flew from South America and other parts of the world. There often is a strong sense of community at alternative shows, but the sea of emos wearing Evanescence merch and everyone singing along really solidified the meaning of intimacy in this gig.

Amy was captivating on the keys and the mic throughout ‘My Immortal’, performing solo on the stage prior to the rest of the band launching in on a show stopping crescendo. The outfit closed off their set with one of the most iconic alternative music songs ever written, ‘Bring Me To Life’. Not that anyone was sleeping, but my god the Metro Theatre really felt woken up and alive. The audience nailed the backing vocals and the band gave it their all for an extended live climax to the night. Evanescence bid farewell to a standing ovation, and they told us they’d see us tomorrow.

While I only know some of the more popular and longstanding songs of Evanescence’s discography, it’d be impossible to deny the magic they bring to fans around the world. The chance to see a band of this calibre in a venue of this size was an incredible and unique experience; I don’t think there’ll be a show quite like this again for Evanescence and it was a pleasure to witness the magic unfold.
