Fresh off his sold-out tour of Australia, everyone’s favourite Canadian and purveyor of beautiful, sad boi tunes- Dallas Green, has released another single from the forthcoming album The Love Still Held Me Near, ‘F*cked It Up’ with his band City and Colour. And man, what a heart-wrencher.
Starting with beautiful, slow acoustic guitar and Dallas’ signature velvet voice, the song eventually heads into what I like to call their now signature “Nashville” sound. The chorus laments with beautiful harmonies – “We had everything we wanted but we f*cked it up”. Dallas explains that the song is a reminder that the realities of life can test even the strongest relationships but that the song also offers hope and resilience.
“When you are young, you’re sold on this idea of what life is supposed to be…get married, have kids, and live happily ever after. But that’s not real life. You change. Life evolves and you evolve with it. This song is for everyone who’s going through it.” Dallas explains.
During his recent show in Brisbane, Dallas defended his sad songs, saying that if you only hear the sadness in them and not the happiness and hope – you aren’t listening properly, and that struck me. While my love life is generally pretty good, I have still had my fair share of ups and downs and heartache and ‘F*cked It Up’ is definitely a song that resonates. It is a reminder that while shit can hurt a lot sometimes, there’s also a lot to be happy for, and the good times can’t come without the bad.
This is the third song we’ve been lucky enough to hear from The Love Still Held Me Near, the band’s seventh album and the film clip is the third in a moody, cinematic series that will accompany each song on the LP. To quote a favourite music podcaster of mine, the songs and film clips are goddam gorgeous and beautiful. It also doesn’t hurt that Dallas looks great in a suit. Make sure you check it out and get keen for the upcoming album.
