The only real punk band (according to Lemmy), The Damned, hit the Croxton Bandroom on Saturday night to finish off their run of Australian shows, joined by Melbourne’s medical themed patriarchy smashing punks Wurst Nurse.
Wurst Nurse kicked off the night with a tight set of sludgy riffs and attitude-filled punk. Wurst Nurse are one of those bands that just never seem to play a bad set and tonight was no different. I’ve seen them a handful of times and it never gets boring, if you haven’t caught them before, I suggest you make a point of doing so.
The band room at The Croxton must have been pretty close to capacity because after ducking out between sets it was almost impossible to weave between the punks, goths and ageing rockabillies to get to the front. Usually, when I see an older band it seems to reflect in the crowd, but this was different, there were kids who’d barely be 18 jumping around with those who may have sore hips and backs this morning.
The Damned hit the stage to the delight of the crowd. Dave Vanian and co did not disappoint. Some times when a band of their vintage play, it can seem a little lacking in energy and/or as though the passion and fun is gone. This was not the case with The Damned. They played a faultless set, moving about the stage like, commanding the crowd and playing good old fashioned punk rock like they were 30 years younger. It was clear that The Damned enjoy playing and that resonated with their fans. I’m glad a dragged myself out of the house on a miserable Melbourne night for this show. I’m still buzzing.
