Alright, I went to a Suicidal Tendencies concert last Friday night at Magnet House, Perth - the band's first West Australian appearance since 2008. For the ill-informed, they’re like the Avengers of punk-hardcore now. Featuring an all-star lineup consisting of Ben Weinman (The Dillinger Escape Plan) on guitar who insisted on jumping off everything like he forgot about gravity, alongside drummer Jay Weinberg - aka the guy who used to be in Slipknot and last but not least longstanding guitarist Dean Pleasants and metal prodigy Tye Trujillo on bass with Cyco Mike Muir himself up front.
But let's not get ahead of ourselves.
Big Noter were up first to warm things up. This hardcore punk outfit fronted by the man, Briggs, isn't just a band, their performance was more like a workout and sermon rolled into one. The whole band were locked in while Briggs was screaming, sweating and preaching like a maniac! It’s like if Public Enemy and Rage Against the Machine had a baby in an AFL locker room. One's certainly not to be missed in future.
Next up, the California legends and who everyone came out to see.
Frontman Mike Muir came out in his signature bandana and immediately started pacing the stage. He’s fired up. The whole crowd’s fired up. The man is a human tornado on stage. Within moments the pit was erupting. Nobody’s trying to look cool; they’re too busy surviving. From the photo pit, it looks pretty much like a human washing machine in there. One dude was asking me if I had seen his shoe.
After belting through a stack of classics, including 'You Can't Bring Me Down', 'Join The Army' and new song 'Adrenaline Addict', a surprise appearance made the night extra special when former member - and current Metallica bassist - Robert Trujillo was spotted rocking out watching his son kill it on stage before making an appearance with backing vocals which sent those in the pit into yet another frenzy on the eve of Metallica's own show in town.
By the end of the night, everyone was chanting 'S-T, S-T' and if you didn't, you probably weren't leaving the gig alive.
Suicidal Tendencies was the most fun I’ve had getting yelled at by grown men in shorts. And I don’t even drink Pepsi (there it is, you knew I had to drop this reference somewhere. I hate myself).
