As I was running behind schedule the anticipation was killing me. 2019 UNIFY Gathering alumni, Pridelands have been killing it recently and with a strong reputation for powerful, awe inspiring performances and strong catalogue of incredible songs behind them, it was bound to be a great demonstration of what these guys have to offer infant of a sold out band room.
I arrived just in time to witness Geelong local up and comers Amberyse. This incredible 5-piece played their metalcore sound to perfect timing and precision. Playing a 30 minute set full of non-stop breakdowns, the crowd reacted well with moshers getting amongst all the action! Make sure you keep your eyes on these guys as they have huge potential. Local Melbourne outfit BLKLST were next to take to the stage and continued to keep the energy high with. Their fast-paced hardcore sound. Playing a healthy mix of old and new favourites, they are never afraid of playing an insanely heavy song or two. They manage to maintain an admirable amount of enthusiasm which is always incredible to watch as the crowd responds with their high energy sing-alongs and moshing.
Finally it was time for Pridelands to hit the stage, kicking this off with their latest offering ‘Dark Sources’, they began their set by playing with absolute conviction and new me away right from the beginning. As vocalist Mason Bunt stalked from each side of the stage, back and forth, it created a vibe of ‘are you fucking listening?!’ Which of course was a definite yes. Both vocalists Mason Bunt and Joshua Cory seemed so crazily good together as their vocals and stage presence mesmerised the crowd, sounding almost exactly as they do recorded it goes to show the amount of raw talent this band has. Instrumentally this band is beyond their years, hitting every note with spot on timing and not once did they not hit mark with every note they played. With a setlist of old and new favourites such as ‘Any Colour You Desire’, ‘Machina’, ‘Boys’ and ‘Slowly’, and also a new unreleased song which sounded incredible (keep your eyes open for announcements!). It was easy to see why the crowd were so hyped up for the act and carried that energy throughout the entire set. It's really no wonder why this band has such a huge following this early in their career.
Pridelands continue to go from strength to strength as their fan base seemingly grows minute by minute. Still an independent act, they have achieved so much in such little and keep defying the odds as they release banger after banger. Who knows how far these guys can push the limits to just how far they can go, I am excited to witness it!
