On Melbourne’s hottest day since Black Saturday, the Royal Melbourne Hotel was turned into a makeshift sauna. Before the venue had even opened the queue to get in was halfway down the street so needless to say, opening band Starve pulled quite an impressive sized crowd and started the night off with some massively heavy songs. This band has only released one song, so I wasn’t sure what to expect but they blew me away. Next up was BLKLST who pulled off a fantastic show, although they struggled to interact with the crowd and to get them all involved, which was a bit of a letdown, however they showed a lot of promise as an up and coming band.

Australia’s newest supergroup Wither started off strong and carried this presence throughout the entirety of their set with energetic moshers getting amongst it all. It was an enjoyable set to watch and after my first time seeing this band perform I am already curious to follow this band to see what direction they take and where they end up. Finally, it was time for Good Things Festival alumni Make Them Suffer, by this point everyone in the crowd was drenched in sweat but nobody let this slow them down. With a healthy mix of old and new favourites such as ‘Let Me In’, ‘Weeping Wastelands’, ‘27’ and ‘Vortex’ the crowd was going nuts with a truckload of crowd surfing, stage dives and even the crowd pulling of a rowboat which first started during Make Them Suffer’s set at UNIFY Gathering 2018 and has since been an ongoing tradition. I was really impressed as the band maintained a high level of intensity all throughout their show, even in the sweatbox that was known as Plastic.

After the 40 min-long set, the crowd just couldn’t get enough chanting “one more song!” over and over but unfortunately, there wasn’t an encore. Make Them Suffer continuously prove why they are one of Australia’s best acts in the heavy music scene and they aren’t showing signs of slowing down either with a huge US/Canada tour supporting Born of Osiris and Chelsea Grin starting off in February. If you are yet to witness this incredible talent, make sure you change that the next time you get the chance!
