Flogging Molly - Gig Review & Photo Gallery 14th April @ Croxton Bandroom, Melbourne VIC

Flogging Molly
The Croxton Bandroom, Melbourne VIC
April 14th, 2019
Supports: Mesa Cosa and Beans on Toast
Flogging Molly kicked off their run of Bluesfest sideshows with a cracker of a gig at The Croxton Bandroom last night. Beans on Toast aka Jay McAllister all the way from the UK got the night started off with his acoustic guitar singing songs of love, politics, MDMA, and how we are all on the same sinking ship, so it’s time that we all pitch in and bail a bit of water out. Beans kept the crowd involved and cheering along, he definitely seems like the kind of guy you’d be happy to share a jazz cigarette with in the camping area on the fourth long day of a festival. He’s got a run of shows coming up all over the place, get to one.
Melbourne’s Mesa Cosa took the energy right up with their brand of garage punk party anthems. The growing crowd began to move about. These guys looked like they were having a ball, which definitely rubbed off on the crowd. Great band, good tunes! Mesa Cosa definitely seems like the kind of band you’d love to have a beer with at a Saturday afternoon BBQ that inevitably becomes a long tram ride home on Sunday morning.
To the crowd’s delight, Dave King led Flogging Molly on to the stage. In the five years since their last visit, the Irish folk-inspired punks have not lost any of the vigor or wit that they’re known for. The set was a good mixture of songs from their latest album Life Is Good and older favourites like Drunken Lullabies, Seven Deadly Sins and What’s Left of the Flag. The band jumped and ran about the stage like they were still in their early twenties. The mosh/jig pit did not stop the whole set and beer rained down from everywhere. It was exactly what you’d want and expect from a Flogging Molly show.
