Atreyu
The Triffid, Brisbane QLD
July 9, 2025
Supports: Memphis May Fire and Future Static

What a night to revisit an OG metalcore classic that helped shape the genre into what it is today.

Atreyu rode into Brisbane to kick off The Curse World Tour - an anniversary run for their 2004 breakthrough album which many of us recall being one of THE gateway releases responsible for getting us into heavy music and, in particular, the metalcore genre in its infancy stages.

As the chilly breeze of Brissie lashed our faces (yes it gets cold here, shut up!), fans old and, well, old... dribbled into the venue in their best black tees and metal merch to check out openers Future Static tearing up the stage. Whether it be the cold weather ceasing up limbs or the anticipation of QLD's win in the state of origin, many of the gig goers were solid in their stance watching on, with head nods at a minimum and a lack of moshing presented to the Melbournians who did their absolute best to win over new fans in their short slot. Let's hope other states pick up the momentum a little bit for the prog-core outfit.

Unfortunately, this lack of movement continued into Memphis May Fire's set - who were back down under for the first time since supporting Parkway Drive back in 2015 - and despite that decade away not even frontman Matty Mullins could invoke a hectic mosh from the aforementioned elder generations. It's such a strange occurrence to go from seeing a band like LANDMVRKS create utter chaos from the first song at the same venue, to seeing a well established name in metalcore struggle to get the crowd moving - but it's not from a lack of trying, I just think the SOLD OUT crowd may have been unfamiliar with the band or too much time had passed to reacquaint themselves with Memphis May Fire in the lead up to the shows.

Still, the band powered through an impressive sixteen song performance including favs like 'Shapeshifter', 'Paralyzed', 'Bleed Me Dry' and 'Necessary Evil'. As the CO₂ filled the space between the barrier and the stage (to the point of almost running out by the third act), Matty and co. delivered the goods, rounding out with 'Blood & Water' amidst a sea of cheers and applause.

Following a short changeover, the lights dimmed and Atreyu took to the stage wasting no time as they leapt into an solid track-by-track performance of The Curse - exactly how it was presented upon release 21 years ago. The crowd turned into a frenzy with the combined intricate riffage and bellowing "GOOOOOOO" for 'Bleeding Mascara' which resulted in bodies being flung from left to right, causing chaos with bodies falling to the ground and drinks being spilt from unsuspected former pit fiends. Frontman Brandon Saller oozed with charisma and sounded inch perfect with both his cleans and screams, while bassist Marc McKnight held his own with solid gutturals all night as he screamed in place of former Alex Varkatzas. I'll admit, I was certain the band would be missing something without Alex present for such an important album, but Marc really impressed me with his no holds barred approach, keeping up with Brandon all night as the two tangoed with their vocal displays. When lead guitarist Dan Jacobs and drummer Kyle Rosa kicked off that signature riff x drum duo for 'Right Side Of The Bed', the energy produced from the crowd could have powered a nuclear reactor as the cheers became deafening while the sprit fingers were flickering high.

For many of us, hearing this album as it was intended to be played was awe inspiring and Atreyu made sure to live up to the expectations of every punter in attendance. The chorus sing-a-longs were epic, the solos were mesmerising and still packed a huge punch after two decades. Mid-way through the show the band revealed they had re-recorded The Curse and are selling the limited edition vinyl at all the upcoming shows on the world tour. This run won't be reprinted so get in while you can.

The night took an interesting turn for two reasons - One, after disappearing momentarily during the opening notes of 'The Crimson', Brandon appeared in front of us, parting the crowd like Moses and the Red Sea while singing along with the fans who all stood in awe as he gracefully strolled past. A couple of lucky female punters copped a personal serenade as he sang directly to them in their own little circle and their smiles could have lit up the city more than any celebration of QLD's Origin win! Two - a fight broke out close to the stage and instead of using anger or force to subdue the tiny penis sporting knuckleheads, the band not only called for them to stop, reminding everyone that the show was a safe space for everyone, but they hilariously went on to say they'll open mouth kiss the next person who starts a fight - much to the approval and cheers of everyone in attendance. Considering every single member of Atreyu is a total babe, yes, including pocket rocket Dan Jacobs, I instantly looked for the biggest, meanest bloke in the room to punch on with but alas, it wasn't meant to be.

As the album celebration wrapped, the band returned to the stage for a three track encore (including 'Ex's and Oh's' fuck yeah!) before wrapping up festivities yet again, sending us all back into the cold Wednesday evening fulfilled and fortunate to be the first in the world to catch this anniversary's commencement.

For those hoping to grab a last minute ticket - you're shit outta luck as the whole tour is completely sold out - with any luck someone might end up selling theirs on Tixel, to which I say grab it, you won't be disappointed.
